Facial recognition technology has led to the apprehension of several sex offenders within a brief period, according to authorities. Greater Manchester Police reported that Live Facial Recognition (LFR) cameras have been utilized 23 times since October, resulting in one out of every five arrests involving individuals registered as sex offenders.
These cameras, mounted on specialized police vehicles, scan faces for distinct biometric data known as ‘faceprints’ and instantly compare them against a watchlist of wanted offenders, notifying officers if a match is identified.
Apart from deploying them in the city center and at the airport, GMP stationed the cameras outside Old Trafford during the recent Manchester United vs Manchester City derby, marking the first time they have been used at a football match.
The Home Office has provided LFR cameras to police forces through nationwide trials, with a recent Metropolitan Police pilot in Croydon leading to an arrest approximately every 34 minutes on average.
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood announced on Monday that the vans will soon be accessible to all forces in England and Wales as part of a significant policing overhaul. The number of camera vans is set to increase from 10 to 50.
In defense of the initiative, Mahmood emphasized the importance of leveraging new technology to combat crime effectively while ensuring alignment with societal values and preventing the unjust involvement of innocent individuals in legal matters.
Since October 2025, Greater Manchester Police has made 40 arrests using LFR, with registered sex offenders accounting for one-fifth of the total. Out of these arrests, 30 individuals have been formally charged with various offenses.
During a recent operation, a 43-year-old man, John Thompson, was apprehended in Piccadilly Gardens and charged with 36 offenses related to breaching his Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO). Other arrests in the same area included individuals facing charges for stalking, possession of indecent images, and domestic offenses.
At Manchester Airport, a man was arrested on suspicion of drug possession with intent to supply and released pending further investigation, as confirmed by the police.
GMP highlighted additional successful outcomes, such as apprehending a suspect wanted for firearms offenses and safeguarding a vulnerable individual who had left an NHS facility.
Sergeant Ryan Magee of the Sexual Offenders Management Unit praised the effectiveness of Live Facial Recognition technology in enhancing public safety and proactive policing efforts. The collaborative efforts of various police units have significantly improved the identification and prevention of high-risk sexual offenders, demonstrating the technology’s value in safeguarding communities.
Real-time identification facilitated by LFR has enabled early intervention to avert potential harm, leading to a notable increase in intelligence-led stops and arrests. Targeted operations have bolstered the force’s capability to intercept dangerous individuals, including those intending to travel for criminal purposes. Ongoing collaboration with the LFR team is expected to further enhance public protection in future operations.
