“Families Embrace The Family Chat Campaign for Online Safety”

Date:

Giovanna and Tom Fletcher decided it was time for their 11-year-old son to have a phone as he started secondary school in September. Understanding the importance of managing and ensuring their child’s safety in the digital world, Giovanna emphasized the need for open conversations between parents and children.

With the increasing number of children receiving smartphones as Christmas gifts, families are now navigating the challenges and benefits of this technology. To support families in addressing online device usage, a campaign called The Family Chat, in collaboration with Tesco Mobile, is being launched. This initiative aims to promote discussions about online safety at all stages of a child’s development.

Giovanna expressed her enthusiasm for the campaign, highlighting the valuable resources provided by Tesco Mobile, such as age-specific toolkits and online support. As parents of three boys, including an 11-year-old and younger sons aged seven and nine, the Fletchers have implemented measures to ensure responsible device usage within their family.

Their eldest son, equipped with a restricted smartphone for communication purposes, understands the importance of setting boundaries and the reasons behind them. Giovanna emphasized the significance of maintaining an open dialogue with children and gradually introducing internet access based on readiness.

Acknowledging the need for adults to model healthy device usage habits, Giovanna emphasized designated phone-free zones and limiting screen time during family interactions. She emphasized the importance of gradually introducing children to internet access and ensuring they are prepared for the online world.

Additionally, practical tips for enhancing online safety for children were provided, including setting up child accounts, entering the correct age for safety settings, enabling safety filters, utilizing parental controls, and fostering ongoing conversations about online activities. Dr. Rebecca Whittington, Reach’s online safety editor, stressed the importance of prioritizing safe phone setup to mitigate potential risks associated with online exposure.
