Two students tragically killed by an individual with paranoid schizophrenia were subjected to alcohol and drug testing following their deaths. However, the perpetrator, Valdo Calocane, did not undergo similar testing.
Grace O’Malley-Kumar and Barnaby Webber, aged 19, lost their lives in Nottingham on June 13, 2023, in an attack carried out by Calocane. Subsequently, Calocane also attacked and critically injured caretaker Ian Coates, 65, over an hour later.
After taking Mr. Coates’ van, Calocane struck and harmed three pedestrians. In January 2024, Calocane confessed to manslaughter and attempted murder and was indefinitely confined to a secure medical facility due to diminished responsibility.
During an inquiry into the deaths, Grace’s father, Sanjoy Kumar, expressed his dissatisfaction at the testing of his daughter and her friend for substances. He mentioned being compelled to sign forms related to human tissues, a process he found objectionable as a general practitioner and former forensic medical examiner with the Metropolitan Police.
Dr. Kumar highlighted the lack of emphasis on the potential sample collection when signing the forms and criticized the fact that the perpetrator was not subjected to similar testing despite the fatal events. He also raised concerns about the downplaying of Calocane’s previous violent behavior and mental health issues by law enforcement officials.
Dr. Kumar questioned the inadequate evaluation of Calocane’s mental state during the Nottingham attacks and the handling of crucial forensic evidence, such as the absence of a hair sample collection. He expressed disappointment at the lack of comprehensive information provided to him, suggesting that his professional background may have influenced the selective disclosure of details by authorities.
The inquiry is ongoing, with Dr. Kumar continuing to advocate for a more thorough examination of the events leading to the tragic incidents in Nottingham.
