The grieving family of a 12-year-old boy who tragically lost his life in a shark attack has honored their son as a cheerful and amiable child.
Nico Antic was participating in a rock ledge jumping activity with friends on January 18 when he was attacked by a shark, resulting in severe leg injuries. Following the incident, he was swiftly transported to Sydney Children’s Hospital where he received intensive care.
In the early hours of today, his devastated parents Lorena and Juan sadly confirmed his passing at the hospital.
This incident, believed to involve a bull shark according to authorities, was one of four reported shark attacks within a span of just two days in New South Wales.
In a message released by the family, they described Nico as a vibrant, sociable, and athletic young boy with a remarkably kind and giving nature. They expressed gratitude to the first responders and the medical staff at Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick for their dedicated care of Nico, as well as the community for their supportive messages.
An online fundraiser established to assist Nico’s family has garnered $240,000 (£121,000) in donations.
The shark attack marked the first of a series of four other shark encounters that unfolded in subsequent days. Prompt action by first responders was lauded, and Nico’s friends were commended for their bravery in rescuing him from the water.
Speaking about the increased shark activity in the Sydney region, Surf Life Saving NSW chief executive Steve Pearce cautioned against swimming or surfing near river mouths due to potential shark congregation resulting from runoff after weather events. Pearce advised opting for local pools over beach activities as a safety measure amidst concerns of poor water quality attracting bull shark activity.
