Family of Teen Who Died from Blood Clot Due to Contraceptive Pill Raises Awareness

Date:

A grieving family has shared their story following the tragic death of their teenage daughter due to a blood clot linked to her use of the contraceptive pill.

Áine Rose Hurst, aged 19, initially mistook a severe headache for a hangover after a night out with friends. Sadly, she passed away two days later.

The recent inquest revealed that Áine had been advised to stop taking the pill due to high blood pressure, but her GP later prescribed it to her again.

In response to their loss, Áine’s parents, Graham and Kerry, are raising awareness about the potential risks associated with contraceptive pills and advocating for changes in NHS guidelines. They have established ARCS – The Áine Rose Contraceptive Safety Foundation – to promote safety in her honor.

Kerry, a mother of two, described Áine as a loving and vibrant individual who cherished her family deeply. Their daughter’s untimely death has left a void in their lives, but they hope that by sharing their experience, they can prevent similar tragedies.

Áine, the only daughter of Graham and Kerry, enjoyed a happy upbringing alongside her brother Charlie in Bolton, Greater Manchester.

Reflecting on Áine’s life, Kerry recalled her daughter’s happy childhood, involvement in dance classes, and passion for family gatherings and quiz nights. Áine was known for her lively and enthusiastic personality.

Despite Áine’s positive health history while on the pill, a sudden onset of a severe headache in March prompted her mother to seek medical help. Tragically, Áine’s condition deteriorated rapidly, leading to her passing despite efforts to save her.

Following Áine’s funeral, her family established ARCS to advocate for improved contraceptive safety measures and to honor Áine’s memory.

The coroner’s report cited a cerebral venous sinus thrombosis as the cause of Áine’s death, with the contraceptive pill identified as a potential contributing factor.

Graham and Kerry emphasize the importance of educating young women about the risks associated with contraceptive pills and advocate for stricter guidelines, especially for individuals with a history of high blood pressure.

In memory of their beloved daughter, the Hurst family hopes that their advocacy efforts will prevent similar tragedies and spare other families from experiencing such devastating losses.
