A group of far-right neo-Nazis reportedly made threats to abduct Australia’s Prime Minister following the Bondi Beach terror incident, as disclosed in disturbing chat messages. Two police operations were initiated after alleged schemes to seize Anthony Albanese and place explosives in mosques were exposed. A conversation from an ominous online chatroom indicated an individual was offered £5000 ($10,000 AUD) to rent a van and snatch Albanese to install a new “nationalist” government. The online group, predominantly composed of far-right members, was established by the orchestrators of a white nationalist demonstration protesting perceived mass immigration to Australia, known as March for Australia.
Leaked exchanges from the Discord group purportedly displayed a user with the alias “cav” proposing the malevolent plan to the group. “I genuinely believe the best option is to literally grab him [Albanese] and put him in a room and force him to answer like every possible question,” wrote cav. When questioned by another participant if he intended to act on it, cav affirmed, “I would, yeah. And if anyone wants to … like rent the van and help come grab him with me. Like, yeah, let’s go.”
Another individual in the forum seemed to offer cav £5,000 ($10,000 AUD) to execute the alarming plot. In a separate disquieting message, cav wrote, “I’ve crossed into the realm of terrorism, bro.… The only way I would take power is through force.”
Subsequently, in the same Discord chatroom a week later, a user named “xertz” claimed they were visited by law enforcement after asserting the ability to create and dispatch bombs to mosques, as reported by the Sydney Morning Herald. This user was eventually expelled from Discord by moderators for discussing terrorist activities.
Hugo Lennon, the organizer of March for Australia, stated he was unaware of specific threats against Albanese or mosques and affirmed that his group did not endorse violence. He clarified, “My involvement in that server has been minimal and sporadic.”
Following a different investigation related to a social media post regarding the abduction of the Prime Minister, plumber Nathan Ballesty, 27, was apprehended by the police. Authorities did not disclose whether these incidents were linked or if he was affiliated with the Discord group. Ballesty has been seen associating with neo-Nazis at gatherings and is connected to a neo-Nazi faction called the National Socialist Network.
Albanese acknowledged an escalation in threats during an interview on ABC’s Insiders, emphasizing his commitment to prioritizing the safety of all Australians over his own. He expressed confidence in the Australian Federal Police (AFP) and other authorities to fulfill their duties, affirming his unwavering dedication to engaging with the public as Prime Minister.
