A tragic accident on a busy street in south London claimed the life of a man after a collision with a police vehicle, as confirmed by emergency responders today.
The incident took place at around 12.35am when a man, believed to be in his thirties, was struck on South London’s main road. The aftermath led to a portion of Borough High Street being closed off until approximately 9am, impacting six bus routes. However, the street has since been reopened. Despite immediate aid from the London Ambulance Service (LAS) and police officers on site, the man tragically lost his life.
The case has been transferred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC). A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police described the incident, stating, “At 12.35am on Wednesday, January 7, a marked police vehicle, responding to an emergency, collided with a pedestrian on Borough High Street, Southwark.”
The spokesperson added, “The pedestrian, a man in his thirties, received immediate first aid from officers and was attended to by paramedics from the London Ambulance Service. Despite all efforts, the man unfortunately passed away at the scene,” as reported by MyLondon.
The spokesperson also mentioned that the deceased’s family has been informed, stating, “His relatives have been notified and are receiving support from specialized officers. The area remains cordoned off, causing disruptions to local traffic.” Following standard protocols, the incident has been reported to the relevant authorities: “As per standard procedure, the Metropolitan Police’s Directorate of Professional Standards and the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) have been notified. The IOPC has initiated an independent investigation, with officers providing full cooperation.”
A representative from the London Ambulance Service stated, “We received a call at 12.34am on Wednesday, January 7, regarding a road traffic incident on Borough High Street, Borough. Our response included an ambulance crew, an advanced paramedic, a fast response car paramedic, and an incident response officer.
