Three individuals, including a 10-month-old infant, lost their lives in a tragic incident during an Easter egg hunt when they were struck by a falling tree. The victims were a 21-year-old mother, her baby daughter, and a 16-year-old teenager. Another 18-year-old woman sustained severe injuries and was airlifted to a hospital for treatment.
The accident occurred in the woods near Satrupholm, Germany, where approximately 50 people from a nearby residential facility for new mothers, pregnant women, and children were participating in the event around 11 am. A massive 30-meter-tall tree collapsed on the group, trapping four individuals underneath. Despite immediate medical attention, the mother and teenager succumbed to their injuries at the scene, while the baby girl passed away later in the hospital. The injured woman was also transported to the hospital via helicopter.
Emergency response teams, including two helicopters and multiple ambulances, quickly arrived at the remote location in suburban Satrupholm. Witnesses reported seeing colorful Easter eggs scattered on the forest floor.
The facility where the victims were from is part of the state-funded child welfare system, providing support to pregnant women and new mothers in need. Grief counselors were dispatched to offer assistance at the site.
Images from the scene, as depicted by the Bild news site, displayed Easter eggs strewn on the ground and covered victims. Weather reports had previously issued a high winds warning in the area.
The severe storm that led to the tragic incident was part of a forecast affecting northern Germany, with wind speeds expected to reach up to 60mph. Local government officials expressed their deep condolences and sympathies for the affected individuals and families.
In a joint statement conveyed by the dpa news agency, regional Governor Daniel Gunther, Interior Minister Magdalena Finke, and Youth and Families Minister Aminata Toure extended their heartfelt thoughts to the families of the deceased, the injured, and all those impacted by the devastating occurrence.
