Two individuals lost their lives and multiple others sustained injuries following a fire at a popular destination for British tourists. The tragic incident occurred at a property in Mallorca, Spain, with nine individuals requiring treatment for smoke inhalation. The fire ignited around 5am on the third floor of a residential building in Magaluf, as confirmed by the Civil Guard.
Despite residents’ efforts to extinguish the blaze, it quickly spread throughout the building, leading to the evacuation of over 12 people. The flames were eventually put out approximately two hours later. The nationalities of the victims remain unknown, and authorities are actively investigating the cause of the fire.
Magaluf, known for its beach and vibrant nightlife, is a favored spot among British visitors, situated approximately 14 miles from Palma de Mallorca. The fire originated on the third floor of Edificio Trianón on C/ Federico García Lorca near Punta Ballena, with the intense flames engulfing the entire building and impeding escape attempts.
Local officials reported that residents and firefighters struggled to contain the fast-spreading fire, leading to tragic outcomes. Calvià’s mayor, Juan Antonio Amengual, expressed deep sorrow over the incident, highlighting the severity of the situation and the challenges faced by emergency responders. He noted that the location of the fire within the building and individuals fleeing to the stairwell instead of staying put may have contributed to the casualties.
Rescue operations are ongoing at the scene, with one individual in critical condition at Son Espases Hospital. Mayor Amengual emphasized the gravity of the situation, underscoring the unexpected severity of what initially appeared to be a minor fire.
