Two individuals have lost their lives following a helicopter crash in close proximity to a police shooting incident. The tragic event occurred in Flagstaff, northern Arizona, on Wednesday night, resulting in the fatalities of the pilot and a trooper-paramedic aboard the law enforcement helicopter.
The Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) reported that its Ranger helicopter crew was dispatched to assist Flagstaff police and other law enforcement agencies in responding to an active shooter situation north of Historic Route 66. The helicopter tragically crashed during the operation, leading to the deaths of both the pilot and the trooper/paramedic on board. The victims’ identities have not been disclosed. The crash transpired around 10:15 pm local time, sparking a subsequent fire, as confirmed by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
Authorities have indicated that no law enforcement officers were harmed during the shooting incident. The suspect involved has been apprehended and sustained non-life-threatening injuries from gunfire.
A local resident named Amanda Brewer recounted contacting the police upon hearing multiple gunshots around 8:40 pm MST. She noted the swift arrival of officers and later described hearing additional gunfire, followed by the sound of the DPS helicopter flying above her residence at approximately 10 pm. Brewer mentioned the audible rotor blades and a significant crash that shook her home, accompanied by a subsequent fire in the nearby forest and further gunfire post-crash.
The Flagstaff Police Department issued a social media alert at 10:15 pm, informing the public of a “critical incident” and advising residents to remain indoors.
DPS has initiated collaborative efforts with the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board to investigate the helicopter crash, while its Major Incident Division will handle the inquiry into the police shooting.
