In a separate event, a small vessel capsized off Hardelot on the northwest coast of France late Wednesday. The Pas-de-Calais administrative department confirmed one casualty, a man aged between 30 and 40, and six individuals with minor injuries, including a one-year-old child, who received medical attention. An investigation has been initiated to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Reports suggest that up to 700 migrants successfully navigated the Channel via small boats on Wednesday. Footage captured French police observing as migrants boarded a dinghy bound for the UK from Hardelot beach. Authorities are restricted from intervening during these boarding activities to prevent potential drownings.
The mode of transportation has evolved, with smugglers now employing larger rubber dinghies that operate as taxis along the French coast. This tactic aims to evade heightened police presence on beaches. Notably, a single dinghy recently brought 128 migrants ashore, surpassing the previous record of 125 arrivals in September of the preceding year.
In a bid to strengthen border control, the UK and France agreed on a £662 million deal, a portion of which will fund enhanced policing measures targeting the so-called taxi boats. The allocated £160 million is contingent on the effectiveness of the French operation, with the UK committing additional funds for increased personnel and surveillance technology in northern France. Despite previous funding injections failing to deter crossings, concerns have been raised by charities regarding potential repercussions and safety risks.
