A father from Taunton, Somerset, faced a devastating loss of £140,000 after being lured by a fabricated video featuring Martin Lewis on Facebook. Wayne Luxon expressed his frustration towards the social media platform for not effectively preventing scams. He fell victim to a fraudulent AI-generated advertisement promoting cryptocurrency investment with promises of significant returns.
Initially, Wayne was enticed by the seemingly legitimate opportunity as his initial investment doubled. Trusting the platform, he proceeded to invest a total of £16,000 from his savings based on the false assurances of high profits. However, when attempting to withdraw his funds, he was asked to pay a substantial tax on his supposed earnings.
Despite his fictitious account showing substantial wealth, Wayne soon realized he had been scammed when his balance plummeted to zero. The financial strain pushed him to the brink of losing everything, forcing him to seek ways to repay the loans he had taken out to cover the fake tax.
Barclays, where Wayne had sourced funds for the scam, reimbursed half of his investment but declined to refund the tax payments. To seek justice, Wayne joined a collective legal action against Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, to reclaim his losses.
Wayne criticized Facebook for allowing such misleading advertisements to proliferate on its platform, leading unsuspecting individuals into financial ruin. Another victim, Jakub Siwiak, echoed similar sentiments after losing nearly £15,000 to a fake investment scheme advertised on Facebook. He emphasized the need for Facebook to take responsibility for the content it promotes and to safeguard its users from fraudulent activities.
Both Wayne and Jakub are part of a group seeking restitution through legal action against Meta, represented by law firms Humphries Kerstetter and Richardson Hartley Law. These firms aim to recover billions lost annually to online scams facilitated through social media platforms.
Efforts to obtain a response from Meta regarding the situation have been made by the Mirror.
