A grieving father expressed his deep sadness after his daughter, who was known for her constant smile, tragically perished in an intentional house fire set by her own mother in Huddersfield.
Gary Brereton emotionally honored his beloved eight-year-old daughter Iliza, describing her as always cheerful and enjoying time with her siblings. He recalled her as a caring and confident girl who excelled in school and took the lead in planning their special father-daughter outings.
Speaking at an inquiry into the deaths of Iliza and her mother, Danielle, following the 2024 house fire on Leeds Road in Huddersfield, Gary reminisced about their cherished moments together. He shared memories of Iliza’s love for family visits and creating lasting memories.
Highlighting Iliza’s academic achievements, Gary mentioned her regular recognition as the Star of the Week and receiving the Headteacher’s Award.
Iliza tragically succumbed to injuries from the fire, which her mother deliberately started. The coroner determined that Danielle had taken her own life and unlawfully ended her daughter’s life as well, following a video apology on YouTube before the incident.
Assistant coroner Caroline Chandler pointed out several “missed opportunities” in Danielle’s care, noting failures to involve safeguarding services despite her disclosure of suicidal thoughts.
After the inquiry, Iliza’s family, led by her father Gary, issued a statement expressing their profound loss and the impact on their lives. They thanked emergency services and supporters while requesting privacy as they mourn and remember Iliza.
