Father Mourns Daughter’s Tragic Death on Rope Swing

Date:

The father of a 12-year-old girl who tragically passed away while playing on a rope swing expressed his grief, stating that his daughter would still be alive if proper actions had been taken. Brooke Wiggins lost her life on November 9, 2024, in Banstead, Surrey, just before her 13th birthday, after a tree branch broke and struck her during playtime with friends, as disclosed at the South London Coroner’s Court.

During the inquest, it was revealed that Surrey County Council, responsible for the tree’s maintenance, had not conducted a scheduled re-inspection in May 2024, as required. Christian Weaver, representing Mr. Wiggins, argued that had the inspections been carried out, the swing would have been removed in accordance with council policy, which mandates the removal of rope swings from trees within seven days.

In a heartfelt statement read by Assistant Coroner Ivor Collett, Lee Wiggins mourned the loss of his daughter, describing her as an exceptional and vibrant young lady. Brooke’s mother, Claire Etherington, also shared poignant words, depicting Brooke as a beautiful, caring individual with a bright future ahead, passionate about various interests like dancing, art, and photography.

Although representatives from Surrey County Council suggested that a tree inspection might not have altered the outcome, the inquest is ongoing, seeking further insights into the tragic incident.
