A man facing charges of mistreating and killing his three-month-old infant son claimed in court that he was an exceptional father. Klevi Pirjani, aged 37, and his wife Nivalda Santos Pirjani, aged 34, are currently standing trial at Liverpool Crown Court for the alleged murder of their son Miguel, who suffered a cardiac arrest and passed away in November the previous year. Medical examinations revealed that Miguel had a fractured skull, brain bleeding, and multiple broken bones of various ages.
The couple is accused of subjecting Miguel to systematic abuse before his tragic death. While denying the allegations, the mother has admitted to a charge of causing or allowing the death of a child.
During his testimony in court, Klevi Pirjani, a former chef and digger driver, expressed his belief that he was an exemplary father and recounted the joy he felt upon learning about his son’s impending arrival. He described being constantly worried about Miguel’s health and diligently seeking information from doctors around the clock.
When questioned by his defense team about the extent and severity of his son’s injuries, Pirjani emotionally refuted any involvement, vehemently stating his love and care for his son. The emergency services responded swiftly to the family’s residence in Seacombe, Wirral, on the day Miguel suffered the cardiac arrest. Subsequent medical evaluations revealed extensive injuries sustained by the infant.
Miguel remained unconscious for several days, with his condition eventually deemed irreversible. He was kept on life support until his passing on November 29, 2024. Post-mortem examinations uncovered additional injuries, further indicating the gravity of the situation.
Providing further background, Pirjani disclosed details about his family’s migration to the UK from Albania and the challenges faced during his childhood due to the Balkan War. He shared insights into his relationship with Nivalda and refuted claims of violence and control.
The trial continues with the prosecution presenting evidence suggesting the couple’s joint responsibility in the abuse and death of Miguel. Both defendants have pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against them, with the legal proceedings ongoing under the supervision of Mr. Justice Baker.
