Today, the FCDO cautioned that there is a possibility of “terrorist attacks in Cyprus.” The updated guidance emphasizes the global high threat of terrorist activities impacting UK interests and British citizens, particularly from groups targeting them. Travelers are advised to remain vigilant in all surroundings.
The FCDO also highlighted that terrorist attacks could occur indiscriminately, even in areas frequented by foreign visitors. They recommend referring to UK Counter Terrorism Policing for information on staying safe abroad and how to respond to a terrorist incident.
While there is no current advisory against traveling to Cyprus, the FCDO flagged the significant security risks posed by the regional escalation, leading to travel disturbances. The UK government specifically mentioned a suspected drone strike at the RAF Akrotiri base on March 2.
Regarding British nationals, instructions were provided to follow guidance from the Sovereign Base Areas Administration British Bases Cyprus Facebook if in the Sovereign Base Areas, and to heed advice from Cypriot local authorities if in the Republic of Cyprus.
On March 4, multiple airlines, including easyJet, Ryanair, British Airways, and TUI, canceled flights from the UK to parts of Cyprus due to tensions in the Middle East. Further updates from airlines regarding travel to Cyprus may be forthcoming following the FCDO alert.
