In the realm of my duties, there are certain moments that carry a sense of formality. They often follow a set pattern, planned and routine. However, as I step up to the podium today to recite the names of every woman believed to have been murdered by a man in the past year, the customary nature of my job fades away.
Reciting these names annually serves to unveil the harsh reality that women face daily, both in our nation and globally. It is a day that never becomes easier. Reflecting on the responsibility I bear, I acknowledge that each name signifies a joint failure of our Parliament, institutions, and society to safeguard women from harm.
Today, I rise not solely as a Minister or Member of Parliament but as one among a historic count of 265 female MPs, uniting to observe International Women’s Day. It brings to mind the remarkable achievements of women worldwide in social, cultural, academic, and political realms.
The significance of this day compels me to choose it deliberately because how can we celebrate women globally without acknowledging the harsh realities faced by many? Some may prefer to keep this grim reality concealed, but simply applauding ourselves on this day while women are being victimized is not progress; it is mere theatrics.
This moment holds immense value for me, not only to pay homage to lives tragically cut short but also to reflect on our national identity and the safety of women we choose to prioritize. However, this moment does not belong to me alone.
It belongs to these women and all women and girls enduring threats, abuse, and harassment, often at the cost of their lives. Undoubtedly, this is the most challenging day of the year, evoking strong emotions and overwhelming sentiments.
Regardless of the discomfort and weight of this moment, I am committed to honoring women in this manner. The fight must persist to ensure women and girls feel secure in their homes, on the streets, and in their workplaces.
Hence, we are mobilizing the full force of the state to reduce violence against women and girls by half within a decade. This is not merely a governmental policy but a crucial support system.
By placing the protection of women and girls at the core of our endeavors, we truly honor these women. And this is only the beginning. I will go to any lengths to make this country a safe haven for women and girls.
