“FIFA’s Controversial Plan: World Cup as Commodity”

Date:

Andy Burnham expressed the sentiment shared by many soccer fans that the World Cup holds a special place as a premier global sporting event and should not be treated as a commodity for sale.

UEFA also condemned the idea of commercializing football’s essence, emphasizing that the integrity and administration of the sport should not be up for sale by FIFA. Despite this, Gianni Infantino appears set on monetizing a portion of the World Cup as if it were a valuable asset to be exploited.

FIFA is considering establishing a new company valued at £15 billion to manage the commercial aspects of its major tournaments, with a plan to offer up to 21% ownership to private investors. This move could generate £3.2 billion, with each of FIFA’s 211 member associations potentially receiving a share worth around £15 million. Infantino is seeking approval from national federations to divide their collective heritage while tempting them with a substantial financial incentive, framing it as a transformative opportunity. However, fans may view it as a compromising decision in pursuit of profit.

The proposal blurs the line between deriving revenue from the World Cup and relinquishing control over its operations to external investors. Infantino’s push to cross this boundary and involve private entities in the tournament’s ownership raises concerns about the potential commercialization and branding of the esteemed competition.

The lack of transparency surrounding the plan is troubling, with UEFA criticizing the secretive development process and Asian and North American bodies claiming they were not consulted. Infantino’s close ties with figures like Joshua Kushner, brother of Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law and senior adviser, further heighten apprehensions about the deal’s implications and potential conflicts of interest.

The perceived coziness between Infantino and Trump has drawn scrutiny, with US Congressman Jamie Raskin calling for transparency and accountability regarding any financial dealings between FIFA and the Trump administration. The partnership with Thrive Eternal, a company linked to the Kushner family, adds another layer of complexity to the situation, raising suspicions about hidden agendas and ulterior motives.

Football enthusiasts and stakeholders are urged to oppose this deal, as it could pave the way for increased commercialization, more interruptions during games, and higher costs for fans. Infantino’s vision for FIFA’s future risks tarnishing the legacy of the World Cup and compromising its integrity for the sake of financial gain.

Infantino’s handling of the World Cup’s future has sparked outrage and calls for his removal due to his perceived disregard for the tournament’s heritage and significance. Critics argue that he is treating the World Cup as a personal asset to exploit, betraying the trust placed in him as its steward and custodian.
