The final perpetrator involved in the murder of Sophie Lancaster is poised to be released from prison following a decision by a parole board that he has taken steps to address his history of violence.
Sophie, aged 20, was brutally attacked while trying to protect her boyfriend Robert Maltby from a group of intoxicated youths in Stubbylee Park, Lancashire, on August 11, 2007. The assailants later boasted about leaving “two moshers nearly dead.”
The term ‘mosher’ was commonly used at the time to refer to individuals who were fans of hard rock or heavy metal music. Tragically, Sophie’s mother had to make the heartbreaking decision to switch off her life support two weeks later, as medical experts confirmed her irreversible condition. Sophie passed away shortly after, while Robert Maltby survived the assault.
Ryan Herbert, along with Brendan Harris, was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2008 for their roles in the vicious attack that led to Sophie’s death. Herbert was released in 2022, and now, the Parole Board has granted Harris a similar release.
During the parole hearing, Harris admitted to consuming alcohol prior to the incident, and he acknowledged initiating the violence. He also accepted his history of frequent aggression.
The Parole Board’s evaluation identified risk factors that could contribute to Harris reoffending, including his lifestyle choices and social circle. It was noted that he struggled with managing his emotions and had a history of substance abuse. Despite his past behavior, Harris had shown progress during his incarceration, participating in programs aimed at addressing his violent tendencies.
Harris has been granted release on license by the Parole Board, with strict conditions including residing at a specified address, demonstrating good behavior, undergoing enhanced supervision, adhering to a curfew, regular drug testing, and alcohol monitoring.
These measures are intended to ensure Harris’s successful rehabilitation and integration back into society.
