Firefighters are currently battling a significant fire outbreak at the Tata Steel facility located in Port Talbot, South Wales. The incident resulted in thick smoke rising from the plant, situated near residential areas, on Wednesday evening. Witnesses heard alarms around 7 pm, followed by the emergence of black smoke from the site, with sirens audible until nearly midnight.
Videos circulated by Wales Online display smoke emanating from the plant, with some locals mentioning they could detect it in the air. South Wales Police informed the public that emergency services are addressing the situation at Tata Steel, Port Talbot, where substantial smoke can be observed. Residents were advised to keep windows and doors shut and to avoid the vicinity if possible.
Earlier in the evening, Tata Steel conducted a controlled demolition of a gas holder at the Port Talbot site. The company clarified that the demolition was carried out safely and was unrelated to the ongoing fire incident. Residents reported feeling their homes tremble when the gas holder was demolished.
Following the demolition, Tata Steel communicated that the loud noise heard in the area was a planned part of their engineering works, aimed at creating space for new raw materials handling areas. The company expressed gratitude towards the team involved in the operation and apologized for any inconvenience caused.
A local resident shared with Wales Online their experience of the events, mentioning the sudden alarms, smoke billowing towards their home, and the lack of prior information about the controlled explosion. The individual described the environment as extremely smoggy at one point during the afternoon.
South Wales Police reiterated their message for residents to stay indoors, close windows and doors, and seek alternative routes due to the ongoing incident at Tata Steel, Port Talbot.
