A content creator specializing in fishing narrowly escaped a serious injury when a shark encountered him during his initial dive in a popular tourist spot. Henry Gibbs, a social media influencer from New Zealand, expressed immense gratitude for retaining his leg and full foot functionality after being attacked by a shark while spearfishing in Fiji on July 24. Following four surgeries and a skin graft, Gibbs anticipates a complete recovery, as stated in an Instagram post on Monday.
Reflecting on the incident, Gibbs acknowledged that he was in the shark’s territory hunting its prey. He mentioned that he plans to share lessons learned from the encounter to help others avoid similar situations and understand appropriate responses. Despite feeling fortunate and having a newfound appreciation for life, Gibbs admitted that he was filming when the incident occurred.
Gibbs had entered the water for spearfishing and observed several grey reef sharks nearby. He speculated on potential triggers for the shark’s aggression, suggesting that the noise from the boat, spearguns, and general water activity might have piqued the shark’s interest. Noting the shark’s escalating agitation and aggressive behavior, Gibbs acknowledged that he should have aborted the dive sooner, underestimating the threat posed by the shark’s size.
In light of the experience, Gibbs advised using plain black wetsuits in tropical waters, citing incidents involving camouflage wetsuits and grey reef sharks. He emphasized the importance of recognizing signs of shark agitation and aggression, cautioning against underestimating risks based on the shark’s size.
