A wanted individual was pursued down a bustling street by a law enforcement horse in a surprising turn of events. The intense chase transpired when officers on duty recognized a familiar face who was wanted for prison recall. Despite being asked to halt, the suspect, identified as Ben Cottam, 41, with no fixed abode, decided to flee, leading to a pursuit by the authorities.
Footage from a body camera captured the moment the suspect dashed away in Blackburn, with the sound of approaching hooves echoing behind him. Amidst the commotion, a determined officer can be heard urging the suspect to stop while the police horse galloped through the street, maneuvering past startled bystanders.
According to Lancashire Police, Cottam quickly acknowledged the futility of evading the horse and its rider. Shortly after, the chase concluded as the suspect surrendered and was apprehended.
Law enforcement officials disclosed that Cottam was subsequently detained at HMP Preston following a brief period in custody. Meanwhile, the police horse was rewarded with a restful time in its stable along with a couple of carrots in recognition of its successful role in the operation.
The authorities stated, “On January 16, during patrol on Northgate in Blackburn, PC Loder and PH Rufford encountered a recognizable face, Ben Cottam, 41, who had an outstanding recall to prison and no fixed address. PC Loder instructed him to stop, but he attempted to outrun PH Rufford. However, PH Rufford swiftly pursued him down the street.
“Realizing his futile chances against the horse and rider, Cottam ceased his escape, leading to his arrest. Following a brief detention, he was remanded to HMP Preston, while PH Rufford enjoyed a well-deserved rest and treats in its stable.”
