Suella Braverman has switched allegiance to the Reform party, becoming the latest Conservative member to do so under Nigel Farage’s leadership.
Formerly a Cabinet member, Braverman, who was dismissed as Home Secretary by two Prime Ministers, expressed her satisfaction with the move, stating, “I feel like I’ve come home.” She now joins Robert Jenrick, her former subordinate during his tenure as Immigration Minister overseeing the expansion of asylum hotel accommodations.
In a sharp critique of her former party, Braverman accused the Tories of lacking courage, backbone, and resolve. She painted a grim picture of the state of Britain, highlighting issues such as uncontrolled immigration, strained public services, a lack of safety, a brain drain of young talent, and a weakened national defense posture.
Following Braverman’s defection, the Conservative Party, led by Kemi Badenoch, responded by suggesting that her departure was expected given her apparent dissatisfaction. The party spokesperson also referenced Braverman’s failed leadership bids within the Conservatives as a point of contention.
Labour Party Chair Anna Turley criticized Farage’s acceptance of former Tory members, including Braverman, attributing them to the chaos and decline that she believes hindered Britain’s progress over the past 14 years.
Braverman, having served as a cabinet member under three Tory leaders, accused her former party of betrayal, particularly condemning their lack of courage and integrity in decision-making processes.
The Reform Party, under Farage’s leadership, has been vocal about its stance on issues such as military veterans’ rights and treatment. Reform MP Danny Kruger emphasized the party’s commitment to prioritizing veterans for roles in essential services like the police and Border Force.
Additionally, the party’s focus on providing support for veterans, especially in terms of mental health services and suicide prevention, has been highlighted. The Reform Party aims to address the challenges faced by veterans and ensure they receive the necessary care and support.
