A former chief constable, Paul Anderson, has been officially absolved of all allegations of gross misconduct after an inquiry by the police oversight body. Anderson, who led the Humberside Police until retiring last year, was accused of making offensive and discriminatory remarks. However, the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) concluded that there was no basis for these claims, as stated in a letter from lead investigator Paul Whitaker to Anderson.
Anderson, who declined to provide a comment, was reportedly pleased to be completely vindicated. In contrast, lower-ranking police officers are typically investigated by a different police force, while chief constables are referred to the IOPC for issues of misconduct.
With 34 years of experience in law enforcement, Anderson joined the Humberside Police as an assistant chief constable in 2019, leading the force to become one of the top-performing units in the country, according to assessments by HM Inspectorate of Constabulary.
Meanwhile, in a separate case, Nick Adderley, a former chief constable of the Northamptonshire Police, faces charges of fraud and misconduct in public office. Adderley, 59, allegedly misrepresented his military background, leading to his impending appearance at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on November 10. The IOPC’s investigation revealed that Adderley falsely claimed to have served as a Lieutenant Commander in the Royal Navy between 2018 and 2024, along with fabricating details about his involvement in the Falklands War and eligibility for specific service medals.
The Crown Prosecution Service’s special crime division decided to prosecute Adderley for fraud and misconduct in public office, emphasizing the sufficiency of evidence and the public interest in pursuing legal action against him.
