A man who completed the London Marathon shared his experience of battling cancer that caused multiple fractures in his back.
David Macartney, a fitness enthusiast, was diagnosed with aggressive stage 4 non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Following intense treatment, he faced excruciating pain, reliance on morphine, and temporary paralysis of his lower body. However, after a remarkable recovery, the 51-year-old is now in remission and has conquered Snowdon mountain in Wales.
David, residing in Hazel Grove, Stockport, recounted that his cancer journey started in early 2022 when he noticed a small lump under his armpit. Initially dismissing it, a visit to his GP led to a cancer diagnosis, plunging him into fear and uncertainty.
Supported by his wife and children, David underwent rigorous chemotherapy at the Christie hospital in Manchester. Despite achieving remission, the treatment left him with severe side effects, including eleven fractures in his back.
Struggling with physical and mental challenges, David gradually regained strength through tailored pain management and physiotherapy. Nearly a year post-treatment, he accomplished the unimaginable feat of hiking up Snowdon and is now focused on reclaiming his active lifestyle.
