Funeral Director’s Scandal: Sentencing Hearing Begins

Date:

A sentencing hearing for Robert Bush, a funeral director involved in a scandal where families received incorrect ashes while their loved ones’ bodies were neglected, is set to begin today. Bush, who has admitted to 67 offenses over a span of 12 years, expressed remorse as he entered the court. The case involves hundreds of victims, with impact statements from affected families to be presented.

The investigation into Bush was triggered in March 2024 when concerns were raised about the treatment of deceased individuals at the Legacy Independent Funeral Directors in Hull. Subsequent police searches uncovered 31 bodies that had not been cremated on time, including a stillborn baby left for nearly two years. Additionally, over 100 sets of ashes were found, some labeled with names and attached letters.

Further inquiries revealed that many families had been given incorrect ashes by Bush, indicating a widespread issue. It was also discovered that Bush engaged in fraudulent activities related to funeral plans and charity donations. He pleaded guilty to various charges, including preventing lawful burials and theft from charities like the Salvation Army and Macmillan Cancer Support.

The court proceedings are expected to involve around 200 victim impact statements. Karen Dry, a campaigner whose parents’ remains were entrusted to Bush, expressed a desire for justice and a lengthy sentence. Families affected by the Legacy Funeral Services debacle attended the hearing, showing a mix of emotions.

As Bush arrived at court, he faced journalists’ questions and expressed his apology to the families. He had previously admitted to multiple fraud counts and is currently on conditional bail. The sentencing at Hull Crown Court, scheduled to last five days, will involve testimonies from over 100 victims to determine Bush’s fate.
