Karen Rojas, now 11 years old, went missing on June 2, 2020, near Los Angeles. She was discovered living under a different name following a collaborative effort between the Washington County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) and authorities in Los Angeles who provided a crucial lead pointing to her presence in North Carolina.
The breakthrough came after an extensive investigation led officials to a school where the child was found to have assumed a false identity.
Both the Washington County Sheriff’s Office and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department expressed astonishment at the positive outcome of the case, emphasizing the importance of diligence and cooperation in achieving such results.
According to reports, Karen’s mother, who had custody of her, ceased communication with the Department of Children and Family Services during an inquiry, leading to suspicions that she had taken the child without authorization.
Authorities have not disclosed whether arrests will be made in connection with the incident, nor have they provided details on how long the girl had been in North Carolina or who she was residing with at the time of her discovery.
