“Government Bans Trail Hunting Amid Conservative Backlash”

Date:

The Government’s decision to prohibit trail hunting has ignited strong reactions from the Conservative Party and Reform UK. Activists have consistently highlighted the brutal impact on foxes during these hunts, with concerns raised by senior police officers about the practice being a cover for illegal fox hunting. The upcoming ban on trail hunting, expected to be implemented in this parliamentary term, is part of the government’s animal welfare strategy scheduled for release on Monday.

Trail hunting involves following a laid scent instead of pursuing real animals and was introduced as a substitute for fox hunting, which was outlawed by the Labour Party in 2004. The animal welfare strategy, unveiled this week, also encompasses banning snare traps and establishing a closed hunting season for hares.

Critics from the Tories and Reform UK, including Nigel Farage, have criticized the ban, labeling government officials as “authoritarian control freaks.” Conversely, Downing Street defended the decision, emphasizing their commitment to fulfilling manifesto pledges.

Activists have praised Labour’s significant Animal Welfare Strategy, particularly the trail hunting ban, but have expressed concerns about the lack of clear timelines for the proposed changes. The strategy, launched on Monday, also includes initiatives to combat puppy smuggling and prohibit electric shock collars for pets.

Environment Secretary Emma Reynolds hailed the UK as a nation of animal lovers and asserted that the government is enacting the most ambitious animal welfare strategy in decades. She stressed the strategy’s focus on enhancing animal welfare across various settings and activities.

The RSPCA’s director of advocacy and prevention, Thomas Schultz-Jagow, commended the government’s new animal welfare strategy, emphasizing its potential to enhance the lives of numerous animals. He highlighted the importance of eliminating cruel practices and expressed eagerness to collaborate with the government to safeguard animal welfare.
