The Government is considering providing households with complimentary plug-in batteries to reduce energy expenses. These batteries function similar to power banks, allowing users to store surplus electricity during off-peak hours for later use when prices are higher. Typically, energy costs peak on weekday evenings when power consumption is high. Plug-in batteries, varying in size from small units akin to microwaves to larger ones equivalent to washing machines, can be plugged into standard wall sockets and discharge stored energy back through them.
According to reports from the i Paper, the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) has proposed a plan to procure plug-in batteries for low-income residences. This initiative, part of Ed Miliband’s Warm Homes Plan, aims to explore various solutions, including plug-in batteries, to address energy affordability. While plug-in batteries are viewed as an appealing option due to their easy deployment, their implementation hinges on regulatory changes led by the new Energy Secretary, Miatta Fahnbulleh.
Currently, plug-in batteries face regulatory constraints as existing wiring standards mandate devices supplying power to the grid to be connected to dedicated circuits. Therefore, DESNZ must conduct safety assessments and update regulations before any potential rollout can proceed. DESNZ has emphasized its current emphasis on introducing plug-in solar panels, which are expected to be legally available by August 27, 2026. Government estimates suggest that plug-in solar panels could save an average UK household between £70 to £110 annually on energy bills.
The Government has also taken steps to support energy efficiency initiatives by offering financial incentives for households in England or Wales looking to switch to heat pumps or biomass boilers. Additionally, low-income households with lower EPC ratings may qualify for home upgrade grants to enhance energy efficiency through measures like insulation, heat pumps, and solar panels. By prioritizing these initiatives, the Energy Secretary aims to reduce energy costs sustainably and enhance overall energy efficiency.
