An individual accused of the murder of a Scottish woman and the subsequent disposal of her body in a suitcase in Athens is scheduled to make an appearance in a Greek court.
The court hearing follows the release of distressing CCTV footage that purportedly captured the alleged perpetrator, identified as Sharif Ahmadzai, pushing the victim’s body through the streets of Athens in a suitcase.
Although authorities have not officially confirmed the suspect’s identity, reports indicate that the accused, a 26-year-old individual originally from Afghanistan, is believed to be Ahmadzai.
In the disturbing video footage, a man wearing a black T-shirt and shorts can be seen carrying a large black suitcase through the city center of Athens. The footage traces his movements as he transports the suitcase to an abandoned building in Kypseli on July 16, where he allegedly left the victim’s body before departing the scene. The remains of the victim, identified as Elisabeth Jane Ross, were discovered two days later by a homeless individual who alerted the authorities.
Upon reviewing surveillance footage near the abandoned building, investigators apprehended the suspect for questioning. Initially detained on charges related to illegal possession of weapons, the 26-year-old now faces allegations of murder and theft of over 10,000 euros from the victim’s bank accounts using her bank cards.
The suspect has reportedly admitted to moving the body but denies the murder accusations leveled against him.
Following the alleged murder, the accused is said to have sent messages from the victim’s phone to her contacts before deactivating the device. He also purportedly acquired another phone to message the victim’s friends, including his wife, posing as an unnamed jihadist claiming responsibility for the crime.
Authorities believe that Ms. Ross passed away five to seven days before her discovery, during a period of intense heat in which temperatures soared to 36 degrees Celsius.
The Hellenic Police in Greece used fingerprint analysis to confirm the victim’s identity as Ms. Ross. Further investigations are underway to determine the cause of death, with initial assessments suggesting suffocation as a potential factor.
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office has expressed condolences and assured that support is being provided to Ms. Ross’s family during this challenging period. Police Scotland is in contact with Greek authorities and is assisting the victim’s family in Scotland.
