Parliament’s newest Member of Parliament (MP) required a police escort in a major UK city due to disturbances at an anti far-right gathering. MP Hannah Spencer of the Green Party was swiftly taken away from Manchester’s Piccadilly Gardens by a police car following altercations that erupted after her participation in the Greater Manchester Together Alliance rally on Sunday.
Elected as the Green Party’s latest MP after a significant win in the Gorton and Denton by-election on February 27, Ms. Spencer found herself in a chaotic situation as she engaged with anti-racism campaigners in the city center. The event, intended to launch the local branch of a national group, turned tumultuous when unidentified individuals approached the MP.
The Greater Manchester Together Alliance had assembled for a ‘March to stop the far right’ in London on March 28. During the rally in Manchester, a YouTuber wearing controversial signage confronted Ms. Spencer with provocative questions, leading to escalating tensions and physical altercations nearby.
Despite police intervention to resolve conflicts at the scene, additional scuffles broke out involving multiple individuals. Officers managed to guide Ms. Spencer to safety outside a Burger King, where she was escorted to a waiting vehicle and driven away from the escalating situation.
Earlier at the event, Ms. Spencer emphasized the importance of unity and community cohesion, denouncing divisive politics and promoting solidarity among people. A Green Party spokesperson condemned the actions of individuals attempting to disrupt the event and harass the MP, particularly on International Women’s Day, highlighting the need to combat misinformation and bigotry faced by elected representatives.
The spokesperson affirmed Ms. Spencer’s resilience in the face of adversity, asserting her commitment to advocating for the communities she represents despite attempts to silence her voice.
