The Prime Minister has emphasized that the fate of Greenland should be determined solely by Greenland and Denmark, as reiterated in Parliament earlier on the same day. The dispute over Greenland has strained relations between the US and Europe, with Denmark’s prime minister cautioning that a US acquisition could jeopardize NATO.
The phone call also touched upon the earlier seizure of the oil tanker Marinera, ongoing negotiations regarding Ukraine, and US military operations in Venezuela. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio had hinted at Trump’s contemplation of “acquiring Greenland,” proposing a potential purchase while keeping the option of using force open.
In an article for the Spectator, Lord Peter Mandelson, who was removed as ambassador to the US due to connections with Jeffrey Epstein, criticized European nations for exaggerated reactions concerning Greenland, attributing it to their diminishing global influence. Mandelson dismissed fears of a US invasion of Greenland as exaggerated and called for increased American involvement in the region to counter Russian and Chinese influence.
Sir Keir’s discussion with Trump coincides with Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy’s upcoming meeting with US Vice-President JD Vance. Greenland is expected to be a focal point during the visit, commemorating America’s 250th independence anniversary from Britain. Lammy and Vance have a longstanding friendship, with Lammy hosting Vance and his family at Chevening last year.
This conversation marked the first interaction between Starmer and Trump since US special forces apprehended Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and transported him to New York over the weekend.
