Greenland Warns Against US Military Action

Date:

The Prime Minister of Greenland has cautioned that the United States is unlikely to resort to military action against Greenland, although the possibility cannot be entirely dismissed. This statement comes amidst renewed threats by former US President Donald Trump to take control of the territory.

Jens-Frederik Nielsen delivered these remarks during a press briefing in Nuuk, where he was joined by former Prime Minister Mute B Egede. They disclosed ongoing evaluations of Greenland’s civil readiness strategies, including the consideration of implementing a policy for households to maintain a minimum of five days’ worth of food supplies.

Emphasizing the need for preparedness, Mr. Egede, now a member of Greenland’s parliament, highlighted the importance of anticipating various scenarios. Both officials underscored Greenland’s NATO membership and the broader repercussions of any escalation beyond the island’s borders, condemning Trump’s repeated social media threats.

Mr. Nielsen denounced Trump’s actions as “disrespectful” and pledged a diplomatic response from Greenland. While no official directive has been issued for residents to stockpile essential provisions, Mr. Nielsen stressed the significance of upholding international law and territorial integrity, calling for mutual respect among Western democracies and expressing gratitude for EU solidarity.

Trump’s provocations have sparked global consternation, prompting discussions among European leaders on potential countermeasures, such as retaliatory tariffs and activation of the EU’s anti-coercion instrument. Referred to as the “trade bazooka,” this mechanism could penalize entities pressuring the EU unfairly, with additional economic tools like tariffs or trade deal suspensions also under consideration.

French President Macron cautioned at Davos that further tariffs might trigger the EU’s first use of the anti-coercion mechanism against the US, suggesting a shift towards peace efforts in Ukraine. Describing the instrument as potent, he advocated its strategic deployment in the current challenging environment.
