“Growing Support for Under-16 Social Media Ban”

Date:

A recent poll conducted by Deltapoll for The Mirror revealed that a significant majority of the public, around two-thirds of respondents, support the idea of implementing a ban on social media use for individuals under the age of 16. This growing support for such a measure indicates a heightened concern among adults regarding the potential risks and dangers that children face in the unregulated online environment.

The call for stricter regulations on social media platforms to protect minors from online harms has intensified, with pressure mounting on Keir Starmer to take action. The survey results showed a notable increase in support for the proposed ban compared to a similar poll conducted by The Mirror in December.

Interestingly, the survey also highlighted some demographic variations in opinion, with women slightly more inclined towards backing the ban compared to men. Additionally, political affiliations seemed to influence attitudes, as a majority of Labour and Tory voters expressed support for the ban, while a significant portion of Reform UK supporters also favored the restriction despite Nigel Farage’s opposing stance on the matter.

While there is a growing consensus among the public for a social media ban for under 16s, the Government has taken a cautious approach, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive strategy rather than a rushed decision. As part of this strategy, various options are being considered, such as imposing age restrictions, implementing curfews, and capping app usage, to enhance online safety for minors.

Moreover, concerns have been raised about the efficacy of an outright ban, with some stakeholders cautioning that it could drive young users towards more clandestine online spaces. Nevertheless, the Government is facing mounting pressure to address these issues, particularly in the wake of Australia’s recent ban on underage social media use and similar plans being discussed in other European countries like Spain and Greece.

Efforts to strengthen age verification measures and restrict access to Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) are also underway to prevent minors from bypassing existing safety protocols. However, challenges persist, as research indicates that children are adept at circumventing age checks through various means, underscoring the need for more robust safeguards.

In response to these developments, stakeholders like bereaved parents and advocacy groups are advocating for immediate action to safeguard children online. While some believe that raising the age limit for accessing harmful social media platforms to 16 is a crucial step in ensuring children’s safety, others argue for more comprehensive regulatory measures that hold tech companies accountable for prioritizing child protection.

Ultimately, the Government has affirmed its commitment to addressing the issue of children’s online safety, emphasizing the importance of a balanced and evidence-based approach. With ongoing consultations and legislative initiatives in place, the aim is to find effective solutions that promote a healthy online environment for young users while safeguarding their well-being.
