In October 2023, Penrose, Colorado officials were alerted to a foul odor emanating from the premises of the Return to Nature funeral home, owned by Jon and Carie Hallford. The funeral home was known for offering affordable, eco-friendly services, including green burials that eschewed traditional embalming methods and harsh chemicals. Despite its positive reputation, a disturbing discovery unfolded when authorities investigated a building associated with the business.
Carie managed the emotional aspects of the business, providing comfort to grieving families, while Jon handled the operational side, boasting 19 years of experience as a third-generation funeral home director. The business offered cremation services starting at $1,200, subcontracted to a local crematory. The Hallfords lived a lavish lifestyle, driving luxury cars and frequenting high-end establishments, indicating a profitable enterprise.
Responding to complaints, police visited the building on October 3 and were met with a repugnant smell. Suspecting foul play, they obtained a search warrant and re-entered the next day. Inside, a gruesome scene unfolded – numerous bodies, totaling 189, were found in various states of decomposition, some dating back to 2019. The bodies were haphazardly stacked, causing a disturbing spectacle of neglect and malpractice.
Further investigation revealed that the Hallfords had deceived families by claiming to provide dignified cremations while neglecting the deceased. Instead, they had been storing bodies in deplorable conditions. The discovery of concrete mix in urns meant to contain ashes exposed their callous scheme. As the news spread, the Hallfords fled, only to be captured later in Oklahoma.
The identification of the victims was a monumental challenge, with investigators resorting to fingerprints and other means to establish identities. The despicable actions of the Hallfords continued to surface, including footage of Jon callously mishandling bodies and their misappropriation of funds meant for pandemic relief. Ultimately, Jon received a lengthy prison sentence for his crimes, while Carie faced legal consequences as well.
The families of the victims expressed profound betrayal and anguish over the deceitful practices of the Hallfords. In response to this tragedy, Colorado implemented new legislation to regulate the funeral industry, aiming to prevent such atrocities from recurring in the future.
