Hikers frequently venture into the Welsh hills to enjoy the vast landscapes offering breathtaking views. Recently, a Welsh hiker known as Dan, famous for documenting his explorations in Wales, made a remarkable discovery at an abandoned farmhouse.
In a TikTok video, Dan shared his experience of stumbling upon Dinorwic Quarry, also known as Dinorwig Quarry, a massive former slate quarry located between Llanberis and Dinorwig in Gwynedd. This quarry, towering above Llyn Peris and Llyn Padarn, was once the world’s second-largest slate quarry, operational from 1787 until 1969.
Despite its historical significance, the quarry now serves as a popular destination for hiking and rock climbing enthusiasts. Following a recent landslide incident in July, Dan posted a video showcasing the beauty of the location and expressing his awe at what he found there.
Describing the views as awe-inspiring, Dan highlighted the stunning scenery of the surrounding mountains and lakes. The video received numerous praises and comments, with viewers expressing admiration for the unique site.
Featuring over 30 galleries or terraces connected to a rubble tip and an inclined railway system, the quarry operated until 1969 before being repurposed for a hydroelectricity scheme, preserving most of its structures. The Australia gallery within the quarry stands out, housing a mill building and equipment dating back to the 1920s.
Despite being an abandoned industrial site, parts of Dinorwic Quarry have become popular for outdoor activities like climbing and hiking. The site’s industrial relics, including ruins, machinery, and railway tracks, offer a glimpse into the region’s rich heritage, attracting visitors intrigued by its historical significance.
Regarding safety concerns, Llechi Cymru emphasized the need for caution when exploring the slate landscape, highlighting the remote and challenging nature of the area. It is essential for visitors to ensure they have permission to access the site, appropriate gear, knowledge of the weather conditions, and necessary skills for the visit to enjoy the experience safely.
