A popular UK lido in Portsmouth is reopening just in time for the upcoming bank holiday weekend after undergoing a £7 million transformation following a four-year closure. Hilsea Lido, which first opened in 1935 and has been a beloved landmark in the region for over 90 years, had fallen into disrepair over time, leading to health and safety concerns and necessitating its temporary closure in 2022.
Now, with a significant £7.75 million renovation, the freshwater lido is ready to welcome visitors once again on Saturday, May 2, boasting a refreshed appearance. The restoration efforts have brought back the lido’s original charm, featuring a revitalized pool base and clear blue waters. Various facilities that required upgrades have been revamped, including new toilets, showers, and vibrant changing rooms surrounding the sparkling pool.
Additionally, the project, supported by the Levelling Up fund, has introduced new amenities such as a sauna for relaxation, an ice cream parlor, and a food van to enhance the experience for families. A recent Instagram post by Hilsea Lido showcasing its transformation generated excitement among eager swimmers, with many expressing admiration for the revitalized look and improvements made.
Expressing enthusiasm for the reopening, Hilsea Lido’s general manager, Judit Kollat, emphasized the historical significance and community value of the lido, aiming to establish it as a dynamic hub for local residents to promote mental and physical well-being.
