“HMRC Notifies 1 Million Eligible for Tax Refund”

Date:

HMRC has sent out a notice to nearly one million individuals who are eligible for a tax refund. Last year, HMRC contacted these individuals after they had paid an excess amount of income tax. Commonly, overpayment of income tax occurs due to errors in tax codes.

If you have overpaid tax, HMRC typically issues a P800 tax calculation letter to guide you on how to claim your refund. The refund can be claimed online or received by check via mail. It is essential to address any tax discrepancies promptly to prevent facing a larger bill later on.

In cases of incorrect tax codes, individuals may be entitled to a refund. Tax codes indicate the amount of tax deducted from your earnings before you receive your salary. One common tax code is 1257L, although not everyone will have this specific code.

Various factors can lead to being placed on the wrong tax code, such as starting a new job or providing incorrect income information to HMRC. To verify your tax code, review your most recent payslip or P45 if you have recently left a job.

If you have overpaid tax and are owed a refund, you can initiate a claim by contacting HMRC at 0300 200 3300 or through the HMRC app. Conversely, individuals who have underpaid tax will owe money to HMRC, and it is advisable to rectify this promptly to avoid accumulating a larger debt.
