Top Conservative figures including David Cameron, Michael Heseltine, and Philip Hammond are part of a group of over 100 peers facing potential expulsion from the House of Lords if new attendance regulations are sanctioned.
Former Prime Minister Cameron, aged 59, ex-Deputy Prime Minister Heseltine, aged 93, and former Chancellor Hammond, aged 70, have each attended less than 20% of sitting days in the last two parliamentary sessions, as per recent House of Lords data. Analysis indicates that other prominent peers falling below the 20% attendance threshold include business magnate Alan Sugar, cricket icon Ian Botham, and media mogul Evgeny Lebedev.
Responding to these revelations, veteran former minister Lord George Foulkes expressed strong support for the proposed attendance rules, emphasizing the importance of active participation and contribution from members of the House of Lords.
In a detailed review of attendance records, it was found that various peers, such as Cameron, Heseltine, and Hammond, had attendance rates below the proposed threshold. The analysis also highlighted the attendance records of Ruth Davidson, Zac Goldsmith, and others, who risk removal if the new rules are enacted.
The House of Lords is considering raising the attendance threshold to 20% of sitting days to ensure better engagement and functionality within the chamber.
