The International Atomic Energy Agency has expressed significant worry regarding the potential for a nuclear incident following an attack on a critical power plant in Iran. The incident, which occurred near the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant, resulted in the death of a security guard and damage to an auxiliary building due to an airstrike early in the morning.
Rafael Grossi, the Director General of the IAEA, issued a stern warning emphasizing the importance of safeguarding the facility and its surroundings from attacks to prevent any nuclear accidents. Iran reported to the IAEA that the projectile strike near the power plant was the fourth such incident in recent weeks, leading to the death of a site security staff member and structural damage, though no radiation level increase was detected.
Emphasizing the critical nature of protecting nuclear power plants during times of conflict, Director General Grossi reiterated the need for military restraint to avoid potential catastrophic consequences. The Bushehr Nuclear Plant, situated approximately 750 kilometers south of Tehran, faces the risk of releasing radioactive materials into the environment if targeted, posing a threat to marine ecosystems and water security in the region.
Despite the recent attack, investigations indicate that the main operational facilities of the plant remain intact and operational, as reported by Iran’s Tasnim news agency. The incident, marking the fourth attack since the onset of the conflict, underscores the ongoing risks associated with potential threats to nuclear facilities.
