“Iconic UK Brewery Famous for Doom Bar Ale Faces Closure”

Date:

A renowned brewery, known for producing the UK’s top-selling ale, is facing closure as announced by its foreign owners.

Sharp’s Brewery, located in Rock, Cornwall, the maker of the popular Doom Bar ale, is set to shut down. Molson Coors Beverage Company, an American owner, has revealed plans to close the brewery and is currently in discussions with its employees.

The brewery is famous for Doom Bar, a well-loved beer found in pubs, restaurants, and supermarkets throughout the UK for many years. It is the best-selling cask ale in the country, according to Cornwall Live.

Molson Coors Beverage Company, a multinational beer giant, has proposed the closure of Sharp’s Brewery in Rock by the end of 2026. The shutdown may lead to approximately 50 job losses at the site.

The company aims to restructure its UK&I business to drive long-term growth by achieving efficiencies and cost savings. Around 200 job cuts are anticipated across the Molson Coors UK&I business as part of the proposed changes.

Since taking over the Sharp’s Brewery site in 2011, Molson Coors has invested over £20 million to enhance capacity, upgrade equipment, foster innovation, and bolster the Sharp’s brand lineup.

The decision to close the brewery was made after exploring various alternatives to ensure the site’s financial viability in the long term, as stated by Molson Coors Beverage Company.

Simon Kerry, the Managing Director for the UK & Ireland at MCBC, expressed the difficulty of the decision to close Sharp’s Brewery, highlighting the dedication of the team and the brewery’s significance to the UK business.

While the consultation on the closure is ongoing, Molson Coors remains committed to the Sharp’s brands and is exploring alternative production methods, including potential partnership opportunities.
