Impending UK Weather Clash: Snow and Cold Ahead

Date:

Weather experts are cautioning Britons about an impending clash of weather systems in the UK, as the forecast points to a confrontation between mild Atlantic air and cold easterly winds. This clash could lead to snowfall and a significant drop in temperatures by the end of the month.

The Met Office has highlighted an increased likelihood of a return to colder conditions later in January, following the recent impact of Storm Goretti, which brought snow, heavy rain, and near-hurricane-force winds to various parts of the country. Meteorologist Greg Dewhurst has indicated that the upcoming days may witness a pivotal moment, with a potential weather battleground between mild conditions and colder air.

Storm Goretti, labeled as a “multi-hazard event,” unleashed gusts reaching nearly 100mph and prompted a rare red weather warning for severe winds in the south-west of England. Tragically, a man in his 50s lost his life when a tree fell on his caravan in Helston, Cornwall, amid the storm’s havoc, leading to flight cancellations, train disruptions, and numerous school closures.

The Met Office described the upcoming scenario as a clash between Atlantic weather systems approaching from the west and high-pressure systems with colder conditions influencing from the east. Initially, the forecast suggests that milder Atlantic air will dominate, bringing cloudy, unsettled weather with showers and temperatures around average levels.

However, meteorologists caution that the situation could shift, with a potential transition to colder weather increasing the chances of snow across parts of the UK. Weather maps from WXCharts indicate the possible arrival of Arctic air, known as the ‘Beast from the East,’ towards the middle of next week, with snow expected to first hit Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland before spreading south and east rapidly.

Snowfall intensity could escalate during the day, with rates of up to 0.4 inches per hour, covering a vast stretch from Colchester to just below Inverness by the evening. The return of snow is anticipated on January 29, blanketing the UK from north to south with accumulations of up to two inches in many regions.

As the night progresses on January 30, areas such as London, parts of the east coast, and western Devon may escape the snowfall, while temperatures are predicted to plummet significantly. Overnight lows could reach -1C to -6C in England, around -5C in Wales, and as low as -12C in parts of Scotland, particularly near Inverness, where snow may persist.

Despite these forecasts, Grahame, a spokesperson from the Met Office, advised caution, emphasizing that the deep freeze is not guaranteed. While there is a slight possibility of colder winds from the east in the final week of January, he highlighted the uncertainty of long-range predictions, noting that milder southern air could prevail to keep the cold at bay for now.
