A death row convict, who claims to be indestructible, narrowly escaped his scheduled execution in the eleventh hour.
John Richard Wood, aged 56, asserts that he has experienced death and resurrection thrice already. Despite having served over 25 years in prison for the murder of a state trooper in South Carolina, US, he was spared from the death penalty due to his severe mental illness.
In December 2000, Wood fatally shot Eric Nicholson during a traffic stop and subsequently engaged in a shootout with the police, injuring another officer before being apprehended.
Following evaluations by three mental health professionals, it was determined that Wood lacks the mental capacity to comprehend the reasons for his punishment, rendering him unfit for execution.
Suffering from schizophrenia, Wood maintains a delusion of immortality, convinced that he has faced execution on three occasions and anticipates resurrection if the state proceeds with his death sentence. Additionally, he falsely believes that he has been pardoned by the governor.
During his 2002 trial, Wood believed the courtroom was acting on behalf of ‘Beloved Kevin Rudolph,’ a deity in a cosmic battle for planetary control, attributing his purported immortality to this deity.
The court was informed that Wood perceives himself as having ‘wings’ and being granted eternal life to combat the justice system.
The judge, along with two psychiatrists and a psychologist, unanimously agreed that Wood’s severe mental illness disqualifies him from being executed.
While Wood comprehends the initial imposition of the death penalty, he remains convinced that the police framed him for a violent assault.
