Inheritance dispute: Man fights siblings over family home

Date:

An inheritance dispute worth £600,000 has arisen involving a man named Robert Chung, who is facing off against his siblings over the family home in Essex. Robert, 62, returned to his parents’ house over three decades ago and remained there until both his father and mother passed away. He claims the house was assured to him as he left a lucrative film industry job to care for his parents in his 30s, working at a Job Centre for more than twenty years while attending to his ailing father and mother.

The disagreement escalated when Robert’s siblings, Marina Bennett, a senior accountant, and Richard Chung, an IT manager, insisted that the house and the rest of the estate should be divided equally among them. They criticized Robert for being a burden on their parents and disputed his alleged caregiving role, stating that their mother had actually tended to Robert’s needs by cooking and doing his laundry as her health declined.

Described as a “pathological liar” by his siblings, Robert’s claims of a substantial career in the film industry were refuted, revealing that he had only worked in a Blockbuster video store. The court heard that the family home, valued at around £400,000, was where the siblings were raised. Robert’s siblings’ barrister argued that their parents had instilled self-reliance in their children, with Marina and Richard pursuing successful careers while Robert disappointed by remaining dependent.

Robert contended that he returned home at his parents’ request to care for them, with his father passing away in 1998 and his mother needing assistance with household chores. However, despite Robert’s assertions of a promised inheritance, his mother passed away without a will, leading to the estate being split three ways. This decision prompted Robert to contest his eviction from the house, claiming he sacrificed his career for his parents’ well-being.

As the legal battle continues, Robert defends his right to stay in the house based on his parents’ alleged promises, while the estate administrator seeks his eviction and demands nearly £200,000 in rent for the years he has lived in the property. The court has reserved its judgment on the matter, with further proceedings pending to resolve the contentious inheritance issue.
