A tragic incident occurred during a bungee jump when a teenage girl lost her life due to a fatal misunderstanding caused by an instructor’s poor English skills. Vera Mol, a 17-year-old from the Netherlands, tragically died in August 2015 after jumping from a bridge in northern Spain without her safety harness being properly attached.
Vera Mol was part of a group of 13 Dutch and Belgian teenagers, all under the age of 18, participating in bungee jumping activities near Cabezón de la Sal, Cantabria. During her first attempt at the extreme sport, she jumped from the bridge and fell around 32 meters to the riverbed below.
Before her jump, the instructor mistakenly called out “no jump,” which Vera may have misunderstood as “now jump,” leading to the fatal outcome. The court concluded that the instructor’s inadequate command of English, described as “very bad,” was a significant factor in the tragedy.
The court found that the instructor’s language confusion played a pivotal role in the accident, as he was not proficient enough in English to safely supervise foreign participants in such a risky activity. The instructor faced charges related to Vera’s death, while the bungee jumping firm’s director was also charged with negligent homicide.
The firm operating the bungee jumping site where the incident occurred labeled it as an accident, with an organization representative acknowledging that the miscommunication led to Vera’s death. It was revealed that Vera received unclear instructions and was not properly secured to the bridge before her jump.
Apart from the language misunderstanding, the court uncovered several safety violations that contributed to the tragic outcome. The instructor failed to secure Vera to a safety line while climbing to the bridge, leaving her unprotected just before her fatal leap. Additionally, the adventure company did not establish a secure waiting area for the group, forcing the teenagers to wait at the edge of the bridge.
Furthermore, the staff did not verify Vera’s age to ensure she met the legal requirements for participation, as she was under 18 and did not have parental consent to take part in the activity. Vera’s family has since called for stricter safety measures to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.
