Iran has initiated a series of cyber assaults on the United States shortly after President Donald Trump issued threats to obliterate the country’s civilization. This move coincides with the looming deadline for the US president’s demand to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
The US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency has reported that hackers linked to Iran are engaging in exploitative activities targeting critical systems in the US. These cyber attackers, identified as sophisticated “advanced persistent threat” groups, are targeting internet-connected industrial systems crucial for essential services.
Reports indicate that the hackers are exploiting devices like programmable controllers, which are vital for operating factories, energy systems, and other key infrastructure. Some incidents have already resulted in disruptions and financial losses. Concerns are mounting over the potential impact on critical services as the hackers manipulate data and control displays to disrupt system operations.
Authorities have advised US organizations to assess their networks to minimize the risk of compromise. The agency previously flagged similar activities by CyberAv3ngers, a group associated with the IRGC Cyber Electronic Command.
In a statement, the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency highlighted the disruptions caused by Iran-affiliated actors targeting operational technology devices, including programmable logic controllers. They warned of operational disruptions and financial losses due to malicious interactions with project files and data manipulation on human-machine interfaces and control displays.
Following Trump’s ultimatum for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz by 8 pm ET, calls for his removal from office have intensified. Former White House director Anthony Scaramucci has urged immediate action, emphasizing the gravity of the situation and the potential consequences of Trump’s actions.
