Khamenei asserted that the United States’ inability to eradicate the Islamic Republic over the years was a significant admission. He emphasized that the US naval presence near Iran posed a threat, but Iran possessed even more potent weapons capable of counteracting any aggression.
Reports from the semi-official Tasnim news agency, affiliated with the Revolutionary Guard, confirmed that missiles fired from within Iran and along its coast struck targets in the Strait of Hormuz. The Revolutionary Guard initiated the military exercise in the Strait of Hormuz, Persian Gulf, and Gulf of Oman, vital global trade routes responsible for a fifth of the world’s oil transport.
Simultaneously, indirect talks between the US and Iran concerning Iran’s nuclear program commenced in Geneva, amid escalating US military activities in the Middle East. The negotiations were specified to focus solely on Iran’s nuclear policies, excluding discussions on internal matters such as recent protests suppression.
As the discussions progressed, both sides maintained firm stances. Trump’s representatives, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, engaged in the negotiations, with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressing optimism about reaching a mutually beneficial agreement with Iran. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, who led Iran’s delegation, affirmed the country’s commitment to constructive negotiations without succumbing to external pressures.
Notably, Trump, en route to Washington, emphasized the significance of the talks, highlighting Iran’s historical negotiating tactics and expressing hopes for a more cooperative approach. The US also facilitated talks between Russia and Ukraine in Geneva, coinciding with the fourth anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Iran commemorated the 40-day period following the violent crackdown on protesters, attributing the unrest to alleged foreign interference. Additionally, a live-fire drill warning in the Strait of Hormuz heightened tensions, with the US deploying additional military assets to the region in response to perceived threats from Iran.
