“Iran Threatens US Warship in Strait of Hormuz”

Date:

Iranian forces have delivered a stern “final warning” to a US warship, as disclosed in recently unveiled audio recordings. The broadcast by Iranian state television purportedly captures a conversation between the Islamic Republic’s military and an American vessel navigating the crucial Strait of Hormuz.

The US Central Command (CENTCOM) verified that two US Navy guided-missile destroyers, the USS Frank E. Peterson and USS Michael Murphy, had entered the strait to commence mine-clearing operations. This development hinted at progress in the efforts to resolve the US-Israel versus Iran conflict, with negotiations initiated in Pakistan with Vice President JD Vance in attendance.

However, negotiations faltered, prompting Iran to release the audio exposing a threat made by the Iranian navy against the USS Frank E. Peterson. The closure and mining of the Strait of Hormuz by Iran ensued after US and Israeli strikes on the Islamic Republic on February 28.

The closure of the strait has roiled global markets, considering it handles a significant portion of the world’s oil and gas tanker shipping. In the released audio, a voice purportedly from the Iranian Navy instructs the USS Frank E. Peterson to change course immediately, warning of potential targeting if orders are not obeyed. The American response from the vessel clarified its transit passage in compliance with international law, without hostile intent.

The audio, seemingly edited, features the Iranian navy voice emphasizing “last warning” three times to the warship. Subsequent broadcasts urge all vessels in the Oman Sea to maintain a safe distance from warships to avoid potential fire.

Amidst these developments, US CENTCOM Commander Admiral Brad Cooper confirmed the commencement of mine-clearing operations in the strait, emphasizing the establishment of a safe passage for maritime traffic. Nevertheless, the Iranian IRGC Navy asserted its full control over the strait, denying passage to military vessels and warning of firm action against unauthorized attempts.

In response, US President Donald Trump declared immediate naval blockade actions in the strait, attributing the closure to the US. Sir Keir Starmer urged both Iran and the US to seek a resolution following the breakdown of talks in Pakistan.
