Iran to Seize Control of Strait of Hormuz, Exiting US Agreement

Date:

Iran has decided to pull out of an agreement with the United States citing American infractions. Iran’s Deputy Minister for Legal and International Affairs, Kazem Gharibabadi, stated that Iran will assert full control over the Strait of Hormuz, regardless of the consequences. This move includes taking over Oman’s share of the crucial waterway.

Gharibabadi emphasized that due to national security concerns, Iran must manage the entire strait during wartime, even though Oman typically shares control. The ongoing conflict has centered around the strategic significance of the Strait of Hormuz.

In response to joint US-Israeli attacks on key Iranian locations in late February, Iran closed the vital trade route through which a significant portion of global oil trade flows. Despite signing a Memorandum of Understanding with the US on June 17 to end hostilities within 60 days, tensions escalated.

Efforts were underway to establish a lasting peace deal, reopen international shipping in the strait, and resolve disputes regarding Tehran’s nuclear program. However, President Donald Trump declared the end of the ceasefire during a NATO summit in Turkey, stating he no longer wished to engage with Iran.

Gharibabadi accused the US of not just breaching the agreement but completely dismantling it, particularly through a naval blockade on Iranian ports. He affirmed that Iran has no intention of initiating talks with the United States. Reports suggest that Trump has announced plans to target Iran’s infrastructure, including power plants, bridges, and energy facilities, starting in the coming week.

Trump also stated that the US would conduct significant strikes on Iran in the immediate future. The situation remains tense as both sides show no sign of backing down.
