“Iranian Key Figures Support Mojtaba Khamenei as Next Supreme Leader”

Date:

Key figures in Iran have come together to support Mojtaba Khamenei, the second-eldest son of the late Ayatollah, as the likely successor to lead the troubled nation as the next Supreme Leader.

The appointment of the new Khamenei was agreed upon after discussions among 88 senior clerics responsible for shaping Iran’s future. This decision was made under increasing pressure from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

According to Iran’s constitution, the Supreme Leader is appointed by the clerics. This marks the second instance of a closed election in the country’s history and the first since 1989, when Ali Khamenei was chosen and later killed in a joint US-Israeli airstrike.

The meetings took place virtually following airstrikes by Israel and the US in Iran. Khamenei, aged 56, is known for his conservative views and ties to the revolutionary guard, often operating discreetly rather than in the public eye.

Despite not having prior public office experience, Khamenei’s selection as the potential new ayatollah may signal the regime’s firm stance against Washington DC, rather than a shift in direction.

If Mojtaba is appointed, explanations will be needed for the Iranian people. The late Khamenei had expressed opposition to hereditary rule, likening it to monarchy and the era of the Shah.

The Middle East Institute highlighted that Mojtaba aspires to become the supreme leader but faces challenges due to the Shia Islamic tradition, which does not typically involve hereditary succession for supreme leadership.

Former US President Donald Trump commented on the limited options for new leadership in Iran, expressing concerns about potential successors and emphasizing the importance of a suitable replacement.

Trump also stated his preference for a leader from within Iran’s government to assume power following the commencement of the bombing campaign.
